Anvendelse: Alene-drue — men nok mest i blandinger. Shiraz i Australien.
The Black Stump is handcrafted by John Casella, who practises his 'dark art' behind closed doors at his family's remote estate. The wine owes its name to an Aussie expression meaning 'the back of beyond', but its remote origins has not stopped it from winning medals at prestigious competitions around the world. Its secret is dark, captivatingly smooth Durif, a rare grape ("that takes no prisoners" The Observer), used as a 'turbocharge' to add inky-black fruit to other reds. Here, it's partnered perfectly with another big Aussie red grape, spicy Shiraz. Deep purple hue. Black, brambly Durif given a spicy, blueberry edge by dark chocolate Shiraz and sweet oak. Velvety, voluptuous, and irresistible served in large glasses with char-grilled steak or Sunday roasts
De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo.
Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 — d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wine including icon dessert wine Noble One and the Yarra Valley wines.
Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values, there is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends.
”œOur story began three generations ago with a vision from my grandparents; Francesco & Elisabetta Calabria in 1945.
My uncle Tony and Bill were running the small winery throughout the 1960”™s and 1970”™s, however in the late 1980”™s the Australian economy was facing a recession and the Australian wine industry was in the doldrums. Sales had dried up, and vines were being ripped out across the country”™s leading wine regions and my dad made the heart-breaking decision to put the family winery on the market. Bill inherited a lot of debt and owed a lot of money to the bank and vowed to do whatever it took to keep the wine flowing at the family winery. Bill, his wife Lena and children; Frank and Michael started washing wine bottles and two litre flagons for other wineries in the Riverina, using an old soft-drink bottle washing machine that he salvaged from a paddock in the back-blocks of Narrandera. The idea of washing bottles was never ideal but it allowed the winery to keep functioning and believe it or not that old machine got the family back on track at the right time. The family wine business was in a better position when the 1990”™s brought new interest and prosperity to the wine industry, with the demand for export.
Thirty successful years later, Bill has been joined by his four children in the business at Calabria Family Wines, but no longer washing bottles for other wineries, instead he has grown his Riverina-base, making consistent, high quality wines from several premium wine growing regions.
My grandparent”™s strong Italian family values are alive in the Calabria Family wine products, and my brothers and I are committed to producing outstanding wines and continuing traditions which my grandparents started over 65 years ago."
Ranked fifth among the Australia red wines with respect to number of prizes won: the 2007 vintage was awarded Silver from the International Wine Challenge; the 2007 vintage was awarded Bronze from the Decanter World Wine Awards; and the 2008 vintage was awarded Seal Of Approval from the Japan Wine Challenge. Compared with other wines made from Petite Sirah (Durif) in Australia this is the second most expensive. The price has been stable over the past year. Widely available in Europe. A good selection of vintages is available. Amongst Australia wines, this is the one of the most popular wines with Wine-Searcher users. There has been a lowering of demand in the past year.
If you have enjoyed the 'Black Stump' Durif, then you will enjoy this powerful wine - 2012 vintage (15%). The distinctive Durif grape, with its dark inky colour makes it a very 'masculine' experience. As its name suggests: 'The Boxer' - a wine with a 'punch'! I will be buying more whilst the stocks last!
The Nugan Group was founded in 1940 when a young Alfredo Nugan emigrated from Spain with his family to start a small fruit and vegetable packing operation in Griffith, New South Wales. In 1965 his son, Ken, took over the business and it underwent substantial growth.
However, the 1980s saw market changes and Ken”™s unexpected death from cancer. At this time Ken”™s wife, Michelle, was forced to drive the then faltering family business forward and that she did.
Michelle was responsible for the Group”™s renaissance into one of Australia”™s most successful agricultural enterprises with turnover in excess of $80 million. This included looking beyond Australia”™s shores to become the largest exporter of niche juice products to Asia in the Southern Hemisphere with production in excess of 70,000 tonne per annum. However, the last decade has seen the family”™s passion for European lifestyle result in their successful diversification into premium wine production and the emergence of the third generation.
Matthew and Tiffany Nugan, Michelle”™s children, have spearheaded the diversification into the wine industry launching the family”™s brands around the world. Matthew built the brands in the export market, whilst Tiffany built the Australian market - resulting in an extremely successful global story.
The Nugan family”™s achievements have been widely recognized. Michelle was named a NSW Telstra Business Women of the Year in 1996 and Australian Export Hero in 2000. Following in her mother”™s footsteps, Tiffany was a 2004 Finalist for the NSW Telstra Young Business Women of the Year. Meanwhile, Matthew, built Nugan Estate into one of Australia”™s Top 20 Wine Exporters. Also during this period, Nugan Estate Chief Wine Maker, Daren Owers, was the 2004 Wine Society”™s Young Wine Maker of Year - Member”™s Choice.
The Nugans are passionate about the Riverina, fully sponsoring two annual programs to develop business skills in the region - WIRED, Women Innovating Rural Enterprise Development, and the Riverina Young Achiever Program.
Mendocino's first vineyards were planted during the American Civil War. Italian immigrants penetrated the wilderness and found a place reminiscent of their steep hillside farms back home. John Parducci's immigrant father arrived in the United States in 1912 and sold grapes to home winemakers across the country. During that time, John was learning the art of winemaking from his father, 200 legal gallons at a time, of course.
John continued making wine at his family's winery until the late 1980s. He purchased the McNab Ridge Winery in 1999 to continue his tradition of making classic Mendocino County varietal wines. John knew the McNab Valley area well, having grown up hunting deer, turkey and wild boar on the ridges and valleys around the McNab Ranch.
John's grandson Rich Parducci grew up in Mendocino County like his grandfather. He joined John at McNab Ridge following the 1999 harvest. Rich has a winemaking degree from California State University at Fresno, and held various winemaking positions before accepting the head job at McNab Ridge.
McNab Ridge Winery now combines the pioneering winemaking spirit of John Parducci with the new tradition and vitality of Rich Parducci. Rich makes wine in the style made famous by his grandfather, John: complex, approachable, and enjoyable to drink. "We make wine that gets people to ask for a second glass," says Rich. Production in 2010 was 16,000 9-liter cases.
Wine facts:
The winery was founded by Jeff and Mary Stai, and opened in 2001. The Stais hired Scott Klann, a native of Murphys, who had over a decade of experience in the Calaveras County wine industry, as Twisted Oak's first winemaker.[2] The original 10 acre (4 ha) vineyard on the 120 acre (48.5 ha) property was planted to Tempranillo, Grenache, and Graciano, grape varieties native to the Mediterranean regions of France, Spain and Portugal. The decision to plant Iberian grape varieties, uncommon in California, was in part due to a dinner that Stai and Klann attended at a Spanish restaurant in which they tried many Spanish wines that impressed them.
The winery's first vintage was 2002, when they produced 10 different wines, all made from purchased grapes. The wines were produced in a custom crush facility at the Olde Lockeford Winery in the town of Lockeford, California. The first vintage began a tradition of naming wines with exclusively non-alphabetic symbols (in a style often used to replace profane words in written English), such as the *%#&@!, a red blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, and Grenache grapes, and the %@#$!, a white wine made of Marsanne and Roussanne grapes (introduced two years later).[3] The unusual wine names were inspired from the owner and winemaker's frustration at being unable to come up with a good name for the red blend. The unique wine labels have been the subject of doctoral research in communications.[4] The 2002 Calaveras County The Spaniard would be well received by wine critics, scoring 92 points in a review for Wine Enthusiast magazine.[5]
With their own winery facility still under construction, Twisted Oak's 2003 vintage was produced at the facilities of Hatcher Winery in the nearby town of Murphys.[6] The winery opened a tasting room on Main Street in Murphys in July 2003. The tasting room is located in the childhood home of Albert Abraham Michelson, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in the sciences (in 1907, for physics).[7] The winery's own winemaking facility and estate tasting room were completed in July 2004, and included a 300 ft (91 m) cave for barrel storage.[2] The winery's first vintage at the Vallecito hilltop facility was 2004, and it produced 14 different wines. Seven of the wines carried the Calaveras County appellation designation, and five were sold under the Sierra Foothills AVA appellation designation.[3] Some of the wines were estate grown and others were made from grapes grown in the Tanner and Dalton Vineyards of Calaveras County or the Sumu Kaw Vineyard in El Dorado County.[8] In the vintages since the winery's completion, Twisted Oak has bottled between 8,000 and 14,000 cases of wine. The winery facility is designed to support the production of 13,000 to 14,000 cases of wine at capacity.
For the 2007 vintage, about 20% of the grapes used by the winery were estate-grown, including all the fruit for The Spaniard and Torcido label wines, with the rest purchased from other vineyards.[9] A tasting room at the winery is open to the public daily, and a tasting room on Main Street in downtown Murphys is open year round. The winery also has its own wine club, which it calls "The Twisted Few".
The Langtry Estate is located in the picturesque Guenoc Valley of Lake County. With over 23,000 acres of land, Langtry's vast property spans throughout Lake County and into the northern tip of Napa Valley.
The winery itself was originally built in 1981 to resemble the old Langtry barn still standing across from the Gebhard Hunting Lodge two miles south of the winery.
Langtry's winery overlooks the beautiful Detert Reservoir, where you may chance upon Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, ducks, geese, and other water fowl. To the south is our famous Tephra Ridge, where our Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards prosper.
